Text of Dave Sim's presentation:
Robert Gavila--at the top of his information sheet for submitting work for consideration for the 2004 Day Prize--wrote "I never give up, I guess". And it's a good thing he didn't as his appearance on the short list for 2004 would indicate. Publishing under the Crossover Comics banner, Robert made the cut this year with part 1 of a 4 part mini-series entitled Nisha whose back cover tag line--"On the list of internationally banned weapons, one stands apart from the rest...This one wants to be left alone"--gives an indication of the level of fictional tension portrayed in this hard-edged narrative. Part conspiracy theory, part political drama it passes the page-turner test in spades. You just want to know what happens next. Robert had a rough year of it trying to get to the drawing board but has got page 17 of issue 2 penciled and is bound and determined that the full projected 110-page story will be completed. He is handing out free copies of his 4-page story "Food" at his table as well as selling the remaining inventory of his mini-comics and invites everyone to drop by and say hello. Please join me in extending a warm welcome to the creator of Nisha, Robert Gavila.
